The beauty of Uptown’s diverse population is reflected in the wide range of gardens throughout the community. The Garden Walk provides residents an opportunity to explore the cultural and geographical identities of the neighborhood through the lens of gardens.
Our annual Uptown Garden Walk is returning for its fourth year! Come out for a day of fun and enjoyment as we explore the diverse identity of Uptown through its local gardens! We will enjoy morning yoga, two guided tours, and a garden gathering! |

Learn how Uptown’s history and gardens matter in our climate-challenged times. Lake Effect: Gardens and History for Climate-Challenged Times will be led by Melanie Eckner of Uptown Coastal Initiative and Susan Ask of animalia project.

Mingle with neighbors and garden stewards and enjoy refreshments and mini-workshops.
Trees of Uptown Tour, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm

Explore the role of trees and how we can care for them in a changing climate. Trees of Uptown will be led by Andrew Lueck of Planned Forest Solutions.

Bikes, Birds, and Butterflies | August 15th
Part of the Fourth Annual Uptown Garden Walk, this bike ride explored coastal and native plants in Uptown, including immersive natural areas and plants thriving in urban landscapes. The ride was at a slow pace and approximately 4 miles long with breaks to tour and hear brief presentations at a selection of gardens. The ride started at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary and ended at Argyle Night Market.
Bikes, Birds, and Butterflies was part of Chicago Sustainability Leaders Network's Nourish (comm)Unity series, and was organized by The Institute of Cultural Affairs and Animalia project.

The Uptown Garden Walk started in 2016, initially planned with ICA and volunteers at the February 27th Seed Swap and Hub Day. ICA staff and volunteers have continued the annual walk to celebrate Uptown's public and community gardens, encouraging walkers to appreciate local assets and connect with ways to provide stewardship to those assets. See 2016, 2017, and 2018 Garden Walk resources.
